Q. What is an Anesthesiologist?
A. An Anesthesiologist
is a physician who, after medical school, has an additional four or more years of training in anesthesiology
and perioperative medicine. Following the formal training is a board certification process consisting of a
rigorous written and oral examination administered by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Q. Will I
meet my Anesthesiologist?
A. Yes, we personally interview and evaluate all patients who will receive an anesthetic
while at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, this includes emergency cases as well as scheduled cases. At
that time your Anesthesiologist will explain the various choices available to you regarding your procedure,
physical status, and type of anesthetic. We will answer all of your questions and do our best to allay your
anesthestic concerns.
Q. Will I hurt after surgery?
A. While there is almost always some discomfort after
surgery we have at our disposal various techniques to minimize that discomfort. These techniques include
intermittant to continuous intravenous infusion of different types of pain relieving medications, long-acting
nerve blocks to make the surgical site numb, and continuous regional pain blocks.
Q. Do you provide care for
pregnant women in labor?
A. Yes, we are available 24 hours every day for pain management consultation to
laboring women. We strongly believe that with appropriate techniques the pain of labor and delivery can be made
more tolerable and in most instances minimized. Your Anesthesiologist will explain to you the options available
for your particular situation. These options generally include either epidural, intrathecal, or intravenous
pain medication.
